Clark, 1993: 251) L2 Comprehension and L2 Production Compared with what has been done in L1-acquisition research, SLA research is narrower in scope. In general, L1-research has been conducted along three different lines: language comprehension, language production and language development. Of these, language production has been the most extensively studied area in SLA research, so much so that learning for production, especially learning grammar, has often at least implicitly been identified with SLA generally.
Then the resulting choice of words and constructions shows that the learner’s assumptions about the L2 are unfounded. In such a situation the state of ignorance may have provoked ‘a desperate casting about for lexical straws to clutch at’ (Singleton & Little, 1991: 63). But for comprehension and for the production of psychotypologically close languages, where there is constant interaction between perceived and assumed cross-linguistic similarities, the concept of ignorance is hardly helpful. It is a truism that if a learner produces an unacceptable word or construction of any kind, some degree of ignorance lies behind it.
