Depending on the climate, the slab may need to be heated. The heating can be done with a hydronic system, or with electric cables. The advantage of the hydronic option is that it can be more easily controlled and can be used for cooling if needed. The electric heating is less expensive but only an open loop control can be used effectively. The room is equipped with work lights that produce the necessary lighting levels for setting up the experiments and measurements. Since these lights produce much more heat than can be tolerated during the actual testing, low heat emission light fixtures are used.
When equipment adds significant localized heat sources, it may be necessary to consider spot cooling to minimize need for atmospheric heat dissipation. The layout in Fig. 2 illustrates an electric heating coil as the terminal reheat device. Electric heating coils offer considerably faster control response compared to hot water coils, although at a tradeoff in overall energy efficiency. A bypass is shown around this coil, to reduce air flow to the room when less cooling is needed. This example also shows installation of temperature sensors near the critical equipment and in the supply air duct; the latter is used to provide the primary control signal to the heating coil and coil bypass damper.
Measurements show that the point stiffness (force divided by the resulting deflection) at the edge of a slab of uniform thickness is about one-half that at some distance away from the edge. ) At a corner, where two edges intersect at right angles, the measurements indicated that the stiffness is about one-fourth that at a distance from the edge. Thus, within 1–2 m on either side of a joint in a slab of uniform thickness, the slab is less able to resist the forces generated by a walker or other dynamic load.
