Fortunately, medical imaging data have their theoretical roots in digital signal processing, and, therefore, artifacts can be explained by and traced back to the foundations of signal processing. In this section, we provide a brief introduction to the sampling theorem and its influence on medical imaging. Specifically, we describe and explain the major data artifacts in medical volumetric data, based on medical 3D scanners. Important concepts for the discussion of many data artifacts are the spatial domain and the frequency domain.

Each image represents a thin slice of the scanned body part and is composed of individual pixels (picture elements). These pixels are arranged on a two-dimensional grid, where the distance between two pixels is typically constant in each direction. For most medical image modalities,1 the horizontal (x) and vertical (y) directions have identical distances, which are called the pixel distance. A constant pixel distance allows the calculation of the actual position by multiplying the respective distance value with the respective pixel index i.

Validation and evaluation are carefully described to provide orientation for designing such studies. In Chapter 20, the use of medical visualization techniques for educational purposes, in particular for anatomy and surgery education, is discussed. Beside describing application areas, this chapter introduces some new techniques, such as labeling and animation of medical volume data, collision detection, and soft tissue deformation for surgical simulation. The book will be concluded with an outlook on future developments of medical imaging, computerassisted surgery, and visualization techniques.
