Mindful awareness slows things down. SITUATION: When you were 18 years old, you got arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. You are not proud of the incident, but you learned a valuable lesson and have never driven a car again after having even one drink. Now, nine years later, you are applying for graduate school and the school wants you to write an essay on what you learned from the incident. WISDOM: Because of our inherent Buddha nature, our positive qualities are stronger and more numerous than our negativities.

SITUATION: Busy houses can become overwhelming at times. You find that it is easy to lose your mindfulness. WISDOM: Many things happen every day that you can use as bells of mindfulness: the doorbell, telephone, turning on a light, flushing a toilet. SITUATION: The next time you light a candle to enhance the atmosphere, reflect on the symbolism of the candle. WISDOM: Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.
